Playing games online with other people is all the rage these days, and with that comes voice-based trash-talking. There are numerous more expensive, high-end gaming headsets you can buy — the Beyerdynamic MMX 300 ($349) and Sennheiser PC 373D ($249) are examples — but we figure most people won't be shopping for reference-quality gaming headsets. 7.1 Virtual Surround Sound: Experience rich, highly positional virtual surround sound powered by revolutionary 3D audio technology.

The entire Arctis family of gaming headsets are compatible with the Xbox One. The party piece is the companion app on the PS4 that allows you to tune the headset specifically to certain games. Logitech's G430 headphones incorporate fantastic immersive sound quality and a lightweight design to deliver premium gaming audio. Moreover, the powerful 40mm neodymium drivers deliver top sound in crystal-clear quality and with a fun, rumbling bass. There are blue accents in the cans that trade the mesh cloth earpads of other Turtle Beach headsets for perforated leather earpads.

PlayStation also created this headset with the ‘ Headset Companion App ‘, so you can now download custom game modes that have been created by PS4 developers that are meant to elevate the audio quality depending on the game or merely your personal preference (you can tweak the EQ settings yourself as well).

Then, along came the HyperX Cloud Revolver S. Functionally very similar to the original Revolvers, the Revolver S gets an upgrade with an included USB Sound Card Audio Controller Box. Turtle Beach headsets that use an optical connection will receive audio but "not all" can be used for chat.

With compatibility for both the PlayStation 4, the Xbox One and a handful of older consoles, the Razer Kraken Pro Analog Gaming Headset takes home the award for the best headset for gaming consoles. Also the audio and mic quality are not very good. The headset is reasonably comfortable, but the light padding of the circular earcups can feel a bit cramped for larger ears.

Still, while the sound might be a touch disappointing you're still left with probably the best-looking gaming headphones ever made, at a decent price. Thrustmaster's headset has brilliant audio quality, crushing bass, clear chat audio and excellent comfort for long gaming sessions.

Wireless headsets: Using a playstation ps4 gaming headset transmitter that's connected to your PC or console, wireless headsets offer hassle-free gaming audio. Currently only available in Uncharted 4, although slated to appear in more games soon, 3D audio works by placing you within spherical sound spaces, plotting sound effects and audio in the space around you, a bit like Dolby Atmos but for headphones.

The only drawback for console gaming is that Cloud II is wired not wireless. It's one of the best headsets PS4 and PC gamers can buy, but it comes at a steep price. Well, this is one of the nicest surprises we've had this year, not only because it has come largely out of left field, but also because it is a genuinely great-sounding set of limited edition gaming headphones from favourite Focal.

In terms of audio, the Logitech G344 comes with a USB-powered DAC that provides virtual 7.1 surround sound when gaming on a PC. It also features 'Pro-G drivers' that Logitech claim provides rich, booming bass, clear highs and precise treble with low levels of distortion.
